2008-02-13xtime_lock vs update_process_timesPeter Zijlstra
Commit d3d74453c34f8fd87674a8cf5b8a327c68f22e99 ("hrtimer: fixup the HRTIMER_CB_IRQSAFE_NO_SOFTIRQ fallback") broke several archs, and since only Russell bothered to merge the fix, and Greg to ACK his arch, I'm sending this for merger. I have confirmation that the Alpha bit results in a booting kernel. That leaves: blackfin, frv, sh and sparc untested. The deadlock in question was found by Russell: IRQ handle -> timer_tick() - xtime seqlock held for write -> update_process_times() -> run_local_timers() -> hrtimer_run_queues() -> hrtimer_get_softirq_time() - tries to get a read lock Now, Thomas assures me the fix is trivial, only do_timer() needs to be done under the xtime_lock, and update_process_times() can savely be removed from under it. 2008-02-09ide: introduce HAVE_IDESam Ravnborg
To allow flexible configuration of IDE introduce HAVE_IDE. All archs except arm, um and s390 unconditionally select it. For arm the actual configuration determine if IDE is supported. This is a step towards introducing drivers/Kconfig for arm. 2008-02-08CONFIG_HIGHPTE vs. sub-page page tables.Martin Schwidefsky
Background: I've implemented 1K/2K page tables for s390. These sub-page page tables are required to properly support the s390 virtualization instruction with KVM. The SIE instruction requires that the page tables have 256 page table entries (pte) followed by 256 page status table entries (pgste). The pgstes are only required if the process is using the SIE instruction. The pgstes are updated by the hardware and by the hypervisor for a number of reasons, one of them is dirty and reference bit tracking. To avoid wasting memory the standard pte table allocation should return 1K/2K (31/64 bit) and 2K/4K if the process is using SIE. Problem: Page size on s390 is 4K, page table size is 1K or 2K. That means the s390 version for pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a struct page. Trouble is that with the CONFIG_HIGHPTE feature on x86 pte_alloc_one cannot return a pointer to a pte either, since that would require more than 32 bit for the return value of pte_alloc_one (and the pte * would not be accessible since its not kmapped). Solution: The only solution I found to this dilemma is a new typedef: a pgtable_t. For s390 pgtable_t will be a (pte *) - to be introduced with a later patch. For everybody else it will be a (struct page *). The additional problem with the initialization of the ptl lock and the NR_PAGETABLE accounting is solved with a constructor pgtable_page_ctor and a destructor pgtable_page_dtor. The page table allocation and free functions need to call these two whenever a page table page is allocated or freed. pmd_populate will get a pgtable_t instead of a struct page pointer. To get the pgtable_t back from a pmd entry that has been installed with pmd_populate a new function pmd_pgtable is added. It replaces the pmd_page call in free_pte_range and apply_to_pte_range. 2008-02-08avoid overflows in kernel/time.cH. Peter Anvin
When the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is not a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ == 300, we currently do a multiply followed by a divide. The intervening result, however, is subject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for HZ == 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000). This is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for example. This patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on 32-bit platforms. When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable way to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this since it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on 64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g. on 64-bit s390), but since the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify the multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000). The reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half of the valid output range. This could be avoided at the expense of having to deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result. Since the intent is to avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only semiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff. At Ralf Baechle's suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute the necessary constants. We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel compiles. This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which is included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0. In order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned constants in the script itself, and structure the script so that Math::BigInt isn't required if pulling values from said table. Running the script requires that the HZ value is available from the Makefile. Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the architectures which didn't already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.) It does *not* touch the sh or sh64 architectures, since Paul Mundt has dealt with those separately in the sh tree. Signed-off-by: H. 2008-02-07Introduce flags for reserve_bootmem()Bernhard Walle
This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions between crashkernel area and already used memory. This patch: Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE. If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts. Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition inside reserve_bootmem_core(). 2008-02-05add mm argument to pte/pmd/pud/pgd_freeBenjamin Herrenschmidt
(with Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com>) The pgd/pud/pmd/pte page table allocation functions get a mm_struct pointer as first argument. The free functions do not get the mm_struct argument. This is 1) asymmetrical and 2) to do mm related page table allocations the mm argument is needed on the free function as well. 2007-11-29FRV: arrange things such that BRA can reach from the trap tableDavid Howells
Arrange the sections in the FRV arch so that a BRA instruction with a 16-bit displacement can always reach from the trap table to entry.S, tlb-miss.S and break.S. The problem otherwise is that the linker can insert sufficient code between the slots in the trap table and the targets of the branch instructions in those slots that the displacement field in the instruction isn't sufficiently large. This is because the branch targets were in the .text section along with most of the other code in the kernel. 2007-10-16During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt
We have had complaints where a threaded application is left in a bad state after one of it's threads is killed when we hit a VM: out_of_memory condition. Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. Remove fs.h from mm.h. For this, 1) Uninline vma_wants_writenotify(). It's pretty huge anyway. 2) Add back fs.h or less bloated headers (err.h) to files that need it. As result, on x86_64 allyesconfig, fs.h dependencies cut down from 3929 files rebuilt down to 3444 (-12.3%). 2007-07-19FRV: work around a possible compiler bugDavid Howells
Work around a possible bug in the FRV compiler. What appears to be happening is that gcc resolves the __builtin_constant_p() in kmalloc() to true, but then fails to reduce the therefore constant conditions in the if-statements it guards to constant results. When compiling with -O2 or -Os, one single spurious error crops up in cpuup_callback() in mm/slab.c. This can be avoided by making the memsize variable const. 2007-07-19define new percpu interface for shared dataFenghua Yu
per cpu data section contains two types of data. One set which is exclusively accessed by the local cpu and the other set which is per cpu, but also shared by remote cpus. In the current kernel, these two sets are not clearely separated out. This can potentially cause the same data cacheline shared between the two sets of data, which will result in unnecessary bouncing of the cacheline between cpus. One way to fix the problem is to cacheline align the remotely accessed per cpu data, both at the beginning and at the end. Because of the padding at both ends, this will likely cause some memory wastage and also the interface to achieve this is not clean. This patch: Moves the remotely accessed per cpu data (which is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned_in_smp) into a different section, where all the data elements are cacheline aligned. And as such, this differentiates the local only data and remotely accessed data cleanly. 2007-07-19mm: fault feedback #2Nick Piggin
This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. This requires requires all handle_mm_fault callers to be modified (possibly the modifications should go further and do things like fault accounting in handle_mm_fault -- however that would be for another patch). 2007-05-17Slab allocators: define common size limitationsChristoph Lameter
Currently we have a maze of configuration variables that determine the maximum slab size. Worst of all it seems to vary between SLAB and SLUB. So define a common maximum size for kmalloc. For conveniences sake we use the maximum size ever supported which is 32 MB. We limit the maximum size to a lower limit if MAX_ORDER does not allow such large allocations. For many architectures this patch will have the effect of adding large kmalloc sizes. x86_64 adds 5 new kmalloc sizes. So a small amount of memory will be needed for these caches (contemporary SLAB has dynamically sizeable node and cpu structure so the waste is less than in the past) Most architectures will then be able to allocate object with sizes up to MAX_ORDER. We have had repeated breakage (in fact whenever we doubled the number of supported processors) on IA64 because one or the other struct grew beyond what the slab allocators supported. This will avoid future issues and f.e. avoid fixes for 2k and 4k cpu support. CONFIG_LARGE_ALLOCS is no longer necessary so drop it. It fixes sparc64 with SLAB.
