2012-10-12vfs: define struct filename and have getname() return itJeff Layton
getname() is intended to copy pathname strings from userspace into a kernel buffer. The result is just a string in kernel space. It would however be quite helpful to be able to attach some ancillary info to the string. For instance, we could attach some audit-related info to reduce the amount of audit-related processing needed. When auditing is enabled, we could also call getname() on the string more than once and not need to recopy it from userspace. This patchset converts the getname()/putname() interfaces to return a struct instead of a string. For now, the struct just tracks the string in kernel space and the original userland pointer for it. Later, we'll add other information to the struct as it becomes convenient. Signed-off-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2012-10-09readahead: fault retry breaks mmap file read random detectionShaohua Li
.fault now can retry. The retry can break state machine of .fault. In filemap_fault, if page is miss, ra->mmap_miss is increased. In the second try, since the page is in page cache now, ra->mmap_miss is decreased. And these are done in one fault, so we can't detect random mmap file access. Add a new flag to indicate .fault is tried once. In the second try, skip ra->mmap_miss decreasing. The filemap_fault state machine is ok with it. I only tested x86, didn't test other archs, but looks the change for other archs is obvious, but who knows :) Signed-off-by: Shaohua Li <shaohua.li@fusionio.com> Cc: Rik van Riel <riel@redhat.com> Cc: Wu Fengguang <fengguang.wu@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2012-10-09Merge tag 'asm-generic' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "This has three changes for asm-generic that did not really fit into any other branch as normal asm-generic changes do. One is a fix for a build warning, the other two are more interesting: * A patch from Mark Brown to allow using the common clock infrastructure on all architectures, so we can use the clock API in architecture independent device drivers. * The UAPI split patches from David Howells for the asm-generic files. There are other architecture specific series that are going through the arch maintainer tree and that depend on this one. There may be a few small merge conflicts between Mark's patch and the following arch header file split patches. In each case the solution will be to keep the new "generic-y += clkdev.h" line, even if it ends up being the only line in the Kbuild file." * tag 'asm-generic' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: UAPI: (Scripted) Disintegrate include/asm-generic asm-generic: Add default clkdev.h asm-generic: xor: mark static functions as __maybe_unused
2012-10-06cross-arch: don't corrupt personality flags upon exec()Jiri Kosina
Historically, the top three bytes of personality have been used for things such as ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE, which made sense only for specific architectures. We now however have a flag there that is general no matter the architecture (UNAME26); generally we have to be careful to preserve the personality flags across exec(). This patch tries to fix all architectures that forcefully overwrite personality flags during exec() (ppc32 and s390 have been fixed recently by commits f9783ec862ea ("[S390] Do not clobber personality flags on exec") and 59e4c3a2fe9c ("powerpc/32: Don't clobber personality flags on exec") in a similar way already). 2012-10-04xtensa: Setup CROSS_COMPILE at the topGeert Uytterhoeven

Make default just return 0. The current default (checking TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG) is taken to architectures that need it; ones that don't do polling in their idle threads don't need to defined TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG at all. ia64 defined both TS_POLLING (used by its tsk_is_polling()) and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG (not used at all). 2012-09-28Make most arch asm/module.h files use asm-generic/module.hDavid Howells
Use the mapping of Elf_[SPE]hdr, Elf_Addr, Elf_Sym, Elf_Dyn, Elf_Rel/Rela, ELF_R_TYPE() and ELF_R_SYM() to either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version into asm-generic/module.h for all arches bar MIPS. Also, use the generic definition mod_arch_specific where possible. To this end, I've defined three new config bools: (*) HAVE_MOD_ARCH_SPECIFIC Arches define this if they don't want to use the empty generic mod_arch_specific struct. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_RELA Arches define this if their modules can contain RELA records. This causes the Elf_Rela mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate_add() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. (*) MODULES_USE_ELF_REL Arches define this if their modules can contain REL records. This causes the Elf_Rel mapping to be emitted and allows apply_relocate() to be defined by the arch rather than have the core emit an error message. Note that it is possible to allow both REL and RELA records: m68k and mips are two arches that do this. With this, some arch asm/module.h files can be deleted entirely and replaced with a generic-y marker in the arch Kbuild file. Additionally, I have removed the bits from m32r and score that handle the unsupported type of relocation record as that's now handled centrally. 2012-09-23xtensa: Add missing RCU idle APIs on idle loopFrederic Weisbecker
In the old times, the whole idle task was considered as an RCU quiescent state. But as RCU became more and more successful overtime, some RCU read side critical section have been added even in the code of some architectures idle tasks, for tracing for example. So nowadays, rcu_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_exit() must be called by the architecture to tell RCU about the part in the idle loop that doesn't make use of rcu read side critical sections, typically the part that puts the CPU in low power mode. This is necessary for RCU to find the quiescent states in idle in order to complete grace periods. Add this missing pair of calls in the xtensa's idle loop. Reported-by: Paul E. 2012-09-18PCI: Provide a default pcibios_update_irq()Thierry Reding
Most architectures implement this in exactly the same way. Instead of having each architecture duplicate this function, provide a single implementation in the core and make it a weak symbol so that it can be overridden on architectures where it is required. 2012-09-18PCI: Discard __init annotations for pci_fixup_irqs() and related functionsThierry Reding
Remove the __init annotations in order to keep pci_fixup_irqs() around after init (e.g. for hotplug). This requires the same change for the implementation of pcibios_update_irq() on all architectures. While at it, all __devinit annotations are removed as well, since they will be useless now that HOTPLUG is always on. 2012-09-06xtensa: remove duplicate CONFIG_HOTPLUG definitionGreg Kroah-Hartman
As part of the plan to remove CONFIG_HOTPLUG, it was found that xtensa duplicates this config option for no reason (it's already defined as part of init/Kconfig). This patch removes it from the xtensa-only Kconfig file. Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2012-08-13TTY: use tty_port_link_deviceJiri Slaby
So now for those drivers that can use neither tty_port_install nor tty_port_register_driver but still have tty_port available before tty_register_driver we use newly added tty_port_link_device. The rest of the drivers that still do not provide tty_struct <-> tty_port link will have to be converted to implement tty->ops->install.
