2007-07-19arch: personality independent stack topPeter Zijlstra
New arch macro STACK_TOP_MAX it gives the larges valid stack address for the architecture in question. It differs from STACK_TOP in that it will not distinguish between personalities but will always return the largest possible address. This is used to create the initial stack on execve, which we will move down to the proper location once the binfmt code has figured out where that is. 2007-07-11PCI: Use a weak symbol for the empty version of pcibios_add_platform_entries()Michael Ellerman
I'm not sure if this is going to fly, weak symbols work on the compilers I'm using, but whether they work for all of the affected architectures I can't say. I've cc'ed as many arch maintainers/lists as I could find. But assuming they do, we can use a weak empty definition of pcibios_add_platform_entries() to avoid having an empty definition on every arch. 2007-05-09rename thread_info to stackRoman Zippel
This finally renames the thread_info field in task structure to stack, so that the assumptions about this field are gone and archs have more freedom about placing the thread_info structure. Nonbroken archs which have a proper thread pointer can do the access to both current thread and task structure via a single pointer. It'll allow for a few more cleanups of the fork code, from which e.g. ia64 could benefit. 2007-05-08atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers
dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. 2007-05-08Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson
Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. This patch removes the redundant macros from all architectures except sparc and sparc64. 2007-05-08move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig
This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge
Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. 2007-04-25[NET]: Adding SO_TIMESTAMPNS / SCM_TIMESTAMPNS supportEric Dumazet
Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function. 2007-02-11[PATCH] consolidate line discipline number definitionsTilman Schmidt
The line discipline numbers N_* are currently defined for each architecture individually, but (except for a seeming mistake) identically, in asm/termios.h. There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be architecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios structure. The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h anyway. So I propose the following patch which moves the definitions of the individual line disciplines to linux/tty.h too. Three of these numbers (N_MASC, N_PROFIBUS_FDL, and N_SMSBLOCK) are unused in the current kernel, but the patch still keeps the complete set in case there are plans to use them yet. 2007-02-11[PATCH] m68k: work around binutils tokenizer changeAl Viro
Recent as(1) doesn't think that . terminates a macro name, so getuser.l is _not_ treated as invoking getuser with .l as the first argument. arch/m68k/math-emu relies on old behaviour, so it gets a lot of undefined macros with more or less current binutils. Note that this behaviour remains in all recent versions and is unrelated to another binutils problems we used to have for a while (having (%a0)+ parsed as two arguments). This one is there to stay; it's an intentional and documented change. .irp <identifier> <words> [text] .endr expands to a copy of text per each word, with \<identifier> replaced with corresponding word. Again, what happens depends on whether gas_ident.x is treated as one or as two tokens; in the former case we'll get old_gas incremented once, in the latter - twice. The rest is obvious. Unlike .macro argument list _anything_ is explicitly allowed after .irp <identifier>; here we are on very safe ground. And yes, it does work with all gas variants I've got here (including vanilla 2.15, 2.16, 2.16.1 and 2.17, plus debian and FC binutils). 2006-12-13[PATCH] Optimize D-cache alias handling on forkRalf Baechle
Virtually index, physically tagged cache architectures can get away without cache flushing when forking. This patch adds a new cache flushing function flush_cache_dup_mm(struct mm_struct *) which for the moment I've implemented to do the same thing on all architectures except on MIPS where it's a no-op. 2006-12-13[PATCH] remove the broken BLK_DEV_SWIM_IOP driverAdrian Bunk
The BLK_DEV_SWIM_IOP driver has: - already been marked as BROKEN in 2.6.0 three years ago and - is still marked as BROKEN. Drivers that had been marked as BROKEN for such a long time seem to be unlikely to be revived in the forseeable future. But if anyone wants to ever revive this driver, the code is still present in the older kernel releases. 2006-12-09[PATCH] Sun3: General updatesSam Creasey
General compile fixes for 2.6.16 for sun3, and some updates to make the new bootloader work correctly. Tested on 3/50, 3/60, 3/80. Signed-off-by: Sam Creasey <sammy@sammy.net> Signed-off-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-12-08[PATCH] tty: preparatory structures for termios revampAlan Cox
In order to sort out our struct termios and add proper speed control we need to separate the kernel and user termios structures. Glibc is fine but the other libraries rely on the kernel exported struct termios and we need to extend this without breaking the ABI/API To do so we add a struct ktermios which is the kernel view of a termios structure and overlaps the struct termios with extra fields on the end for now. (That limitation will go away in later patches). Some platforms (eg alpha) planned ahead and thus use the same struct for both, others did not. This just adds the structures but does not use them, it seems a sensible splitting point for bisect if there are compile failures (not that I expect them) Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-12-07[PATCH] cleanup asm/setup.h userspace visibilityAdrian Bunk
Make the contents of the userspace asm/setup.h header consistent on all architectures: - export setup.h to userspace on all architectures - export only COMMAND_LINE_SIZE to userspace - frv: move COMMAND_LINE_SIZE from param.h - i386: remove duplicate COMMAND_LINE_SIZE from param.h - arm: - export ATAGs to userspace - change u8/u16/u32 to __u8/__u16/__u32 Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de> Acked-by: Russell King <rmk@arm.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2006-12-07[PATCH] Pass struct dev pointer to dma_cache_sync()Ralf Baechle
Pass struct dev pointer to dma_cache_sync() dma_cache_sync() is ill-designed in that it does not have a struct device pointer argument which makes proper support for systems that consist of a mix of coherent and non-coherent DMA devices hard. Change dma_cache_sync to take a struct device pointer as first argument and fix all its callers to pass it. 2006-12-07[PATCH] Add struct dev pointer to dma_is_consistent()Ralf Baechle
dma_is_consistent() is ill-designed in that it does not have a struct device pointer argument which makes proper support for systems that consist of a mix of coherent and non-coherent DMA devices hard. Change dma_is_consistent to take a struct device pointer as first argument and fix the sole caller to pass it. 2006-12-07[PATCH] remove kernel syscallsArnd Bergmann
The last thing we agreed on was to remove the macros entirely for 2.6.19, on all architectures. Unfortunately, I think nobody actually _did_ that, so they are still there.
