Commit fec1d0115240 ("[PATCH] Disable CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID for abnormal
exit") has caused a subtle regression in nscd which uses
CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID to clear the nscd_certainly_running flag in the
shared databases, so that the clients are notified when nscd is
restarted. Now, when nscd uses a non-persistent database, clients that
have it mapped keep thinking the database is being updated by nscd, when
in fact nscd has created a new (anonymous) one (for non-persistent
databases it uses an unlinked file as backend).
The original proposal for the CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID change claimed

The resulting patch from Roland (https://lkml.org/lkml/2006/10/26/269)
seems to have a larger scope than the original patch asked for. It
seems that limitting the scope of the check to core dumping should work
for SIGSEGV issue describe above.

We have scripts which write to certain fields on 3.18 kernels but this
seems to be failing on 4.4 kernels. An entry which we write to here is
xfrm_aevent_rseqth which is u32.
echo 4294967295 > /proc/sys/net/core/xfrm_aevent_rseqth
Commit 230633d109e3 ("kernel/sysctl.c: detect overflows when converting
to int") prevented writing to sysctl entries when integer overflow
occurs. However, this does not apply to unsigned integers.
Heinrich suggested that we introduce a new option to handle 64 bit
limits and set min as 0 and max as UINT_MAX. This might not work as it
leads to issues similar to __do_proc_doulongvec_minmax. Alternatively,
we would need to change the datatype of the entry to 64 bit.

Commit bbeddf52adc1 ("printk: move braille console support into separate
braille.[ch] files") moved the parsing of braille-related options into
_braille_console_setup(), changing the type of variable str from char*
to char**. In this commit, memcmp(str, "brl,", 4) was correctly updated
to memcmp(*str, "brl,", 4) but not memcmp(str, "brl=", 4).
Update the code to make "brl=" option work again and replace memcmp()
with strncmp() to make the compiler able to detect such an issue.

The following commit:
66eb579e66ec ("perf: allow for PMU-specific event filtering")
added the pmu::filter_match() callback. This was intended to
avoid HW constraints on events from resulting in extremely
pessimistic scheduling.
However, pmu::filter_match() is only called for the leader of each event
group. When the leader is a SW event, we do not filter the groups, and
may fail at pmu::add() time, and when this happens we'll give up on
scheduling any event groups later in the list until they are rotated
ahead of the failing group.
This can result in extremely sub-optimal event scheduling behaviour,
e.g. if running the following on a big.LITTLE platform:

Here the 'a53' event group was always eligible to be scheduled, but
the 'a57' group never eligible to be scheduled, as the task was always
affine to a Cortex-A53 CPU. The SW (group leader) event in the 'a57'
group was eligible, but the HW event failed at pmu::add() time,
resulting in ctx_flexible_sched_in giving up on scheduling further
groups with HW events.
One way of avoiding this is to check pmu::filter_match() on siblings
as well as the group leader. If any of these fail their
pmu::filter_match() call, we must skip the entire group before
attempting to add any events.

A discrepancy between cpu_online_mask and cpuset's effective_cpus
mask is inevitable during hotplug since cpuset defers updating of
effective_cpus mask using a workqueue, during which time nothing
prevents the system from more hotplug operations. For that reason
guarantee_online_cpus() walks up the cpuset hierarchy until it finds
an intersection under the assumption that top cpuset's effective_cpus
mask intersects with cpu_online_mask even with such a race occurring.
However a sequence of CPU hotplugs can open a time window, during which
none of the effective CPUs in the top cpuset intersect with
cpu_online_mask.
For example when there are 4 possible CPUs 0-3 and only CPU0 is online:

rtree_next_node() walks the linked list of leaf nodes to find the next
block of pages in the struct memory_bitmap. If it walks off the end of
the list of nodes, it walks the list of memory zones to find the next
region of memory. If it walks off the end of the list of zones, it
returns false.
This leaves the struct bm_position's node and zone pointers pointing
at their respective struct list_heads in struct mem_zone_bm_rtree.
memory_bm_find_bit() uses struct bm_position's node and zone pointers
to avoid walking lists and trees if the next bit appears in the same
node/zone. It handles these values being stale.
Swap rtree_next_node()s 'step then test' to 'test-next then step',
this means if we reach the end of memory we return false and leave
the node and zone pointers as they were.
This fixes a panic on resume using AMD Seattle with 64K pages:

Here struct mem_zone_bm_rtree's start_pfn has been returned instead of
struct rtree_node's addr as the node/zone pointers are corrupt after
we walked off the end of the lists during mark_unsafe_pages().
This behaviour was exposed by commit 6dbecfd345a6 ("PM / hibernate:
Simplify mark_unsafe_pages()"), which caused mark_unsafe_pages() to call
duplicate_memory_bitmap(), which uses memory_bm_find_bit() after walking
off the end of the memory bitmap.

Restore the processor state before calling any other functions to
ensure per-CPU variables can be used with KASLR memory randomization.
Tracing functions use per-CPU variables (GS based on x86) and one was
called just before restoring the processor state fully. It resulted
in a double fault when both the tracing & the exception handler
functions tried to use a per-CPU variable.

With the latest gcc compilers, they give a warning if
__builtin_return_address() parameter is greater than 0. That is because if
it is used by a function called by a top level function (or in the case of
the kernel, by assembly), it can try to access stack frames outside the
stack and crash the system.
The tracing system uses __builtin_return_address() of up to 2! But it is
well aware of the dangers that it may have, and has even added precautions
to protect against it (see the thunk code in arch/x86/entry/thunk*.S)
Linus originally added KBUILD_CFLAGS that would suppress the warning for the
entire kernel, as simply adding KBUILD_CFLAGS to the tracing directory
wouldn't work. The tracing directory plays a bit with the CFLAGS and
requires a little more logic.
This adds that special logic to only suppress the warning for the tracing
directory. If it is used anywhere else outside of tracing, the warning will
still be triggered.

This got introduced by 06ec7a1d7646 ("cpuset: make sure new tasks
conform to the current config of the cpuset"). In the upstream
kernel, the function prototype was changed as of b53202e63089
("cgroup: kill cgrp_ss_priv[CGROUP_CANFORK_COUNT] and friends").
That patch is not suitable for stable kernels, and fortunately
the warning seems harmless as the prototypes only differ in the
second argument that is unused. Adding that argument gets rid
of the warning:

I've made a previous attempt at fixing them and we discussed a number of
alternatives.
I tried changing the Makefile to use "merge_config.sh -n
$(fragment-list)" but couldn't get that to work properly.
This is yet another approach, based on the observation that we do want
to see a warning for conflicting 'choice' options, and that we can
simply make them non-conflicting by listing all other options as
disabled. This is a trivial patch that we can apply independent of
plans for other changes.

The origin of the issue I've seen is related to
a missing memory barrier between check for task->state and
the check for task->on_rq.
The task being woken up is already awake from a schedule()
and is doing the following:

CPU3 tries to wake up the task on CPU1 again since it finds
it on the wait_queue, CPU1 is spinning on wait_lock, but immediately
after CPU2, CPU3 got it.
CPU3 checks the state of p on CPU1, it is TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE and
the task is spinning on the wait_lock. Interestingly since p->on_rq
is checked under pi_lock, I've noticed that try_to_wake_up() finds
p->on_rq to be 0. This was the most confusing bit of the analysis,
but p->on_rq is changed under runqueue lock, rq_lock, the p->on_rq
check is not reliable without this fix IMHO. The race is visible
(based on the analysis) only when ttwu_queue() does a remote wakeup
via ttwu_queue_remote. In which case the p->on_rq change is not
done uder the pi_lock.
The result is that after a while the entire system locks up on
the raw_spin_irqlock_save(wait_lock) and the holder spins infintely
Reproduction of the issue:
The issue can be reproduced after a long run on my system with 80
threads and having to tweak available memory to very low and running
memory stress-ng mmapfork test. It usually takes a long time to
reproduce. I am trying to work on a test case that can reproduce
the issue faster, but thats work in progress. I am still testing the
changes on my still in a loop and the tests seem OK thus far.
Big thanks to Benjamin and Nick for helping debug this as well.
Ben helped catch the missing barrier, Nick caught every missing
bit in my theory.

A new task inherits cpus_allowed and mems_allowed masks from its parent,
but if someone changes cpuset's config by writing to cpuset.cpus/cpuset.mems
before this new task is inserted into the cgroup's task list, the new task
won't be updated accordingly.

If kexec_apply_relocations fails, kexec_load_purgatory frees pi->sechdrs
and pi->purgatory_buf. This is redundant, because in case of error
kimage_file_prepare_segments calls kimage_file_post_load_cleanup, which
will also free those buffers.
This causes two warnings like the following, one for pi->sechdrs and the
other for pi->purgatory_buf:

__replace_page() wronlgy calls mem_cgroup_cancel_charge() in "success" path,
it should only do this if page_check_address() fails.
This means that every enable/disable leads to unbalanced mem_cgroup_uncharge()
from put_page(old_page), it is trivial to underflow the page_counter->count
and trigger OOM.

When I added some extra sanity checking in timekeeping_get_ns() under
CONFIG_DEBUG_TIMEKEEPING, I missed that the NMI safe __ktime_get_fast_ns()
method was using timekeeping_get_ns().
Thus the locking added to the debug checks broke the NMI-safety of
__ktime_get_fast_ns().
This patch open-codes the timekeeping_get_ns() logic for
__ktime_get_fast_ns(), so can avoid any deadlocks in NMI.

It was reported that hibernation could fail on the 2nd attempt, where the
system hangs at hibernate() -> syscore_resume() -> i8237A_resume() ->
claim_dma_lock(), because the lock has already been taken.
However there is actually no other process would like to grab this lock on
that problematic platform.
Further investigation showed that the problem is triggered by setting
/sys/power/pm_trace to 1 before the 1st hibernation.
Since once pm_trace is enabled, the rtc becomes unmeaningful after suspend,
and meanwhile some BIOSes would like to adjust the 'invalid' RTC (e.g, smaller
than 1970) to the release date of that motherboard during POST stage, thus
after resumed, it may seem that the system had a significant long sleep time
which is a completely meaningless value.
Then in timekeeping_resume -> tk_debug_account_sleep_time, if the bit31 of the
sleep time happened to be set to 1, fls() returns 32 and we add 1 to
sleep_time_bin[32], which causes an out of bounds array access and therefor
memory being overwritten.
As depicted by System.map:

the dma_spin_lock.val is set to 1, which caused this problem.
This patch adds a sanity check in tk_debug_account_sleep_time()
to ensure we don't index past the sleep_time_bin array.

In the meanwhile, all processes exiting/forking are blocked almost
stalling the system.
This patch moves the threadgroup_change_begin from before
cgroup_fork() to just before cgroup_canfork(). There is no nee to
worry about threadgroup changes till the task is actually added to the
threadgroup. This avoids having to call reclaim with
cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem held.

When checking the current cred for a capability in a specific user
namespace, it isn't always desirable to have the LSMs audit the check.
This patch adds a noaudit variant of ns_capable() for when those
situations arise.
The common logic between ns_capable() and the new ns_capable_noaudit()
is moved into a single, shared function to keep duplicated code to a
minimum and ease maintainability.

Hyper-V vmbus module registers TSC page clocksource when loaded. This is
the clocksource with the highest rating and thus it becomes the watchdog
making unloading of the vmbus module impossible.
Separate clocksource_select_watchdog() from clocksource_enqueue_watchdog()
and use it on clocksource register/rating change/unregister.
After all, lobotomized monkeys may need some love too.

Recently, in commit 37cf4dc3370f I forgot to check if the timeval being passed
was actually a timespec (as is signaled with ADJ_NANO).
This resulted in that patch breaking ADJ_SETOFFSET users who set
ADJ_NANO, by rejecting valid timespecs that were compared with
valid timeval ranges.
This patch addresses this by checking for the ADJ_NANO flag and
using the timepsec check instead in that case.

For adjtimex()'s ADJ_SETOFFSET, make sure the tv_usec value is
sane. We might multiply them later which can cause an overflow
and undefined behavior.
This patch introduces new helper functions to simplify the
checking code and adds comments to clarify
Orginally this patch was by Sasha Levin, but I've basically
rewritten it, so he should get credit for finding the issue
and I should get the blame for any mistakes made since.

task_numa_assign()") points out, the rcu_read_lock() cannot protect the
task_struct from being freed in the finish_task_switch(). And the bug

It is way too easy to take any random clockid and feed it to
the hrtimer subsystem. At best, it gets mapped to a monotonic
base, but it would be better to just catch illegal values as
early as possible.
This patch does exactly that, mapping illegal clockids to an
illegal base index, and panicing when we detect the illegal
condition.

Bharat Kumar Gogada reported issues with the generic MSI code, where the
end-point ended up with garbage in its MSI configuration (both for the vector
and the message).
It turns out that the two MSI paths in the kernel are doing slightly different
things:
generic MSI: disable MSI -> allocate MSI -> enable MSI -> setup EP
PCI MSI: disable MSI -> allocate MSI -> setup EP -> enable MSI
And it turns out that end-points are allowed to latch the content of the MSI
configuration registers as soon as MSIs are enabled. In Bharat's case, the
end-point ends up using whatever was there already, which is not what you
want.
In order to make things converge, we introduce a new MSI domain flag
(MSI_FLAG_ACTIVATE_EARLY) that is unconditionally set for PCI/MSI. When set,
this flag forces the programming of the end-point as soon as the MSIs are
allocated.
A consequence of this is that we have an extra activate in irq_startup, but
that should be without much consequence.
tglx:
- Several people reported a VMWare regression with PCI/MSI-X passthrough. It
turns out that the patch also cures that issue.
- We need to have a look at the MSI disable interrupt path, where we write
the msg to all zeros without disabling MSI in the PCI device. Is that
correct?

Signing a module should only make it trusted by the specific kernel it
was built for, not anything else. Loading a signed module meant for a
kernel with a different ABI could have interesting effects.
Therefore, treat all signatures as invalid when a module is
force-loaded.

There is a double fetch problem in audit_log_single_execve_arg()
where we first check the execve(2) argumnets for any "bad" characters
which would require hex encoding and then re-fetch the arguments for
logging in the audit record[1]. Of course this leaves a window of
opportunity for an unsavory application to munge with the data.
This patch reworks things by only fetching the argument data once[2]
into a buffer where it is scanned and logged into the audit
records(s). In addition to fixing the double fetch, this patch
improves on the original code in a few other ways: better handling
of large arguments which require encoding, stricter record length
checking, and some performance improvements (completely unverified,
but we got rid of some strlen() calls, that's got to be a good
thing).
As part of the development of this patch, I've also created a basic
regression test for the audit-testsuite, the test can be tracked on
GitHub at the following link:

[1] If you pay careful attention, there is actually a triple fetch
problem due to a strnlen_user() call at the top of the function.
[2] This is a tiny white lie, we do make a call to strnlen_user()
prior to fetching the argument data. I don't like it, but due to the
way the audit record is structured we really have no choice unless we
copy the entire argument at once (which would require a rather
wasteful allocation). The good news is that with this patch the
kernel no longer relies on this strnlen_user() value for anything
beyond recording it in the log, we also update it with a trustworthy
value whenever possible.

if branch

is taken. In this case the process has been reaped and the timer is marked as
disarmed anyway. So none of the postprocessing of the sample is
required. Return right away.

Starting with the following commit:
fde7d22e01aa ("sched/fair: Fix overly small weight for interactive group entities")
calc_tg_weight() doesn't compute the right value as expected by effective_load().
The difference is in the 'correction' term. In order to ensure \Sum
rw_j >= rw_i we cannot use tg->load_avg directly, since that might be
lagging a correction on the current cfs_rq->avg.load_avg value.
Therefore we use tg->load_avg - cfs_rq->tg_load_avg_contrib +
cfs_rq->avg.load_avg.
Now, per the referenced commit, calc_tg_weight() doesn't use
cfs_rq->avg.load_avg, as is later used in @w, but uses
cfs_rq->load.weight instead.
So stop using calc_tg_weight() and do it explicitly.
The effects of this bug are wake_affine() making randomly
poor choices in cgroup-intense workloads.

If percpu_ref initialization fails during css_create(), the free path
can end up trying to free css->id of zero. As ID 0 is unused, it
doesn't cause a critical breakage but it does trigger a warning
message. Fix it by setting css->id to -1 from init_and_link_css().

Lengthy output of sysrq-w may take a lot of time on slow serial console.
Currently we reset NMI-watchdog on the current CPU to avoid spurious
lockup messages. Sometimes this doesn't work since softlockup watchdog
might trigger on another CPU which is waiting for an IPI to proceed.
We reset softlockup watchdogs on all CPUs, but we do this only after
listing all tasks, and this may be too late on a busy system.
So, reset watchdogs CPUs earlier, in for_each_process_thread() loop.

If a task uses a non constant string for the format parameter in
trace_printk(), then the trace_printk_fmt variable is set to NULL. This
variable is then saved in the __trace_printk_fmt section.
The function hold_module_trace_bprintk_format() checks to see if duplicate
formats are used by modules, and reuses them if so (saves them to the list
if it is new). But this function calls lookup_format() that does a strcmp()
to the value (which is now NULL) and can cause a kernel oops.
This wasn't an issue till 3debb0a9ddb ("tracing: Fix trace_printk() to print
when not using bprintk()") which added "__used" to the trace_printk_fmt
variable, and before that, the kernel simply optimized it out (no NULL value
was saved).
The fix is simply to handle the NULL pointer in lookup_format() and have the
caller ignore the value if it was NULL.

So I _should_ have looked at other unserialized users of ->load_avg,
but alas. Luckily nikbor reported a similar /0 from task_h_load() which
instantly triggered recollection of this here problem.
Aside from the intermediate value hitting memory and causing problems,
there's another problem: the underflow detection relies on the signed
bit. This reduces the effective width of the variables, IOW its
effectively the same as having these variables be of signed type.
This patch changes to a different means of unsigned underflow
detection to not rely on the signed bit. This allows the variables to
use the 'full' unsigned range. And it does so with explicit LOAD -
STORE to ensure any intermediate value will never be visible in
memory, allowing these unserialized loads.
Note: GCC generates crap code for this, might warrant a look later.
Note2: I say 'full' above, if we end up at U*_MAX we'll still explode;
maybe we should do clamping on add too.

Every KVM_CREATE_VCPU ioctl will attempt a static_key_slow_inc() call.
The static key's purpose is to skip NULL pointer checks and indeed one
of the processes eventually dereferences NULL.
As explained in the commit that introduced the bug:
706249c222f6 ("locking/static_keys: Rework update logic")
jump_label_update() needs key.enabled to be true. The solution adopted
here is to temporarily make key.enabled == -1, and use go down the
slow path when key.enabled <= 0.

While this prior commit:
54cf809b9512 ("locking,qspinlock: Fix spin_is_locked() and spin_unlock_wait()")
... fixes spin_is_locked() and spin_unlock_wait() for the usage
in ipc/sem and netfilter, it does not in fact work right for the
usage in task_work and futex.
So while the 2 locks crossed problem:

... works with the smp_mb() injected by both spin_is_locked() and
spin_unlock_wait(), this is not sufficient for:

// iterate lockless list
... because in this scenario, the store from spin_lock() can be delayed
past the load of flag, uncrossing the variables and loosing the
guarantee.
This patch reworks spin_is_locked() and spin_unlock_wait() to work in
both cases by exploiting the observation that while the lock byte
store can be delayed, the contender must have registered itself
visibly in other state contained in the word.
It also allows for architectures to override both functions, as PPC
and ARM64 have an additional issue for which we currently have no
generic solution.

Recursive locking for ww_mutexes was originally conceived as an
exception. However, it is heavily used by the DRM atomic modesetting
code. Currently, the recursive deadlock is checked after we have queued
up for a busy-spin and as we never release the lock, we spin until
kicked, whereupon the deadlock is discovered and reported.
A simple solution for the now common problem is to move the recursive
deadlock discovery to the first action when taking the ww_mutex.

Commit dead9f29ddcc ("perf: Fix race in BPF program unregister") moved
destruction of BPF program from free_event_rcu() callback to __free_event(),
which is problematic if used with tail calls: if prog A is attached as
trace event directly, but at the same time present in a tail call map used
by another trace event program elsewhere, then we need to delay destruction
via RCU grace period since it can still be in use by the program doing the
tail call (the prog first needs to be dropped from the tail call map, then
trace event with prog A attached destroyed, so we get immediate destruction).

Until now, hitting this BUG_ON caused a recursive oops (because oops
handling involves do_exit(), which calls into the scheduler, which in
turn raises an oops), which caused stuff below the stack to be
overwritten until a panic happened (e.g. via an oops in interrupt
context, caused by the overwritten CPU index in the thread_info).
Just panic directly.

Follow-up to commit e27f4a942a0e ("bpf: Use mount_nodev not mount_ns
to mount the bpf filesystem"), which removes the FS_USERNS_MOUNT flag.
The original idea was to have a per mountns instance instead of a
single global fs instance, but that didn't work out and we had to
switch to mount_nodev() model. The intent of that middle ground was
that we avoid users who don't play nice to create endless instances
of bpf fs which are difficult to control and discover from an admin
point of view, but at the same time it would have allowed us to be
more flexible with regard to namespaces.
Therefore, since we now did the switch to mount_nodev() as a fix
where individual instances are created, we also need to remove userns
mount flag along with it to avoid running into mentioned situation.
I don't expect any breakage at this early point in time with removing
the flag and we can revisit this later should the requirement for
this come up with future users. This and commit e27f4a942a0e have
been split to facilitate tracking should any of them run into the
unlikely case of causing a regression.

While reviewing the filesystems that set FS_USERNS_MOUNT I spotted the
bpf filesystem. Looking at the code I saw a broken usage of mount_ns
with current->nsproxy->mnt_ns. As the code does not acquire a
reference to the mount namespace it can not possibly be correct to
store the mount namespace on the superblock as it does.
Replace mount_ns with mount_nodev so that each mount of the bpf
filesystem returns a distinct instance, and the code is not buggy.
In discussion with Hannes Frederic Sowa it was reported that the use
of mount_ns was an attempt to have one bpf instance per mount
namespace, in an attempt to keep resources that pin resources from
hiding. That intent simply does not work, the vfs is not built to
allow that kind of behavior. Which means that the bpf filesystem
really is buggy both semantically and in it's implemenation as it does
not nor can it implement the original intent.
This change is userspace visible, but my experience with similar
filesystems leads me to believe nothing will break with a model of each
mount of the bpf filesystem is distinct from all others.

On no-so-small systems, it is possible for a single process to cause an
OOM condition by filling large pipes with data that are never read. A
typical process filling 4000 pipes with 1 MB of data will use 4 GB of
memory. On small systems it may be tricky to set the pipe max size to
prevent this from happening.
This patch makes it possible to enforce a per-user soft limit above
which new pipes will be limited to a single page, effectively limiting
them to 4 kB each, as well as a hard limit above which no new pipes may
be created for this user. This has the effect of protecting the system
against memory abuse without hurting other users, and still allowing
pipes to work correctly though with less data at once.
The limit are controlled by two new sysctls : pipe-user-pages-soft, and
pipe-user-pages-hard. Both may be disabled by setting them to zero. The
default soft limit allows the default number of FDs per process (1024)
to create pipes of the default size (64kB), thus reaching a limit of 64MB
before starting to create only smaller pipes. With 256 processes limited
to 1024 FDs each, this results in 1024*64kB + (256*1024 - 1024) * 4kB =
1084 MB of memory allocated for a user. The hard limit is disabled by
default to avoid breaking existing applications that make intensive use
of pipes (eg: for splicing).

creates an unreapable zombie if /sbin/init doesn't use __WALL.
This is not a kernel bug, at least in a sense that everything works as
expected: debugger should reap a traced sub-thread before it can reap the
leader, but without __WALL/__WCLONE do_wait() ignores sub-threads.
Unfortunately, it seems that /sbin/init in most (all?) distributions
doesn't use it and we have to change the kernel to avoid the problem.
Note also that most init's use sys_waitid() which doesn't allow __WALL, so
the necessary user-space fix is not that trivial.
This patch just adds the "ptrace" check into eligible_child(). To some
degree this matches the "tsk->ptrace" in exit_notify(), ->exit_signal is
mostly ignored when the tracee reports to debugger. Or WSTOPPED, the
tracer doesn't need to set this flag to wait for the stopped tracee.
This obviously means the user-visible change: __WCLONE and __WALL no
longer have any meaning for debugger. And I can only hope that this won't
break something, but at least strace/gdb won't suffer.
We could make a more conservative change. Say, we can take __WCLONE into
account, or !thread_group_leader(). But it would be nice to not
complicate these historical/confusing checks.
